For centuries in Ireland, limestone has been used for making headstones, gravestones and monuments. Irish limestone has a blue grey look in matt stone and can be found in many old graveyards. Limestone is attractive but will weather over time and also lose its blue/grey colour. This is a very important consideration in your choice of headstone material. A limestone monument will need continual maintenance to keep it looking it’s best. As Irish limestone is relatively soft and fine grained, it lends itself well to carving, lettering and sculpting.
