For centuries in Ireland, limestone has been used for making headstones, gravestones and monuments. Irish limestone has a blue grey look in matt stone and can be found in many old graveyards. Limestone is attractive but will weather over time and also lose its blue/grey colour. This is a very important consideration in your choice of headstone material. A limestone monument will need continual maintenance to keep it looking it’s best. As Irish limestone is relatively soft and fine grained, it lends itself well to carving, lettering and sculpting. Hand carved celtic cross monuments and stone scrolls are the common limestone memorials.
